Achilles tendonitis:
This is a condition that is characterized by inflammation or irritation of the tendon that connects the calf muscle to the back of the heel. It is typically an overuse injury that can result in swelling and pain on the back part of the ankle.
Achilles tear:
Commonly seen in the younger athletic population and typically described as a sharp pain in the back of the ankle after pushing off or planting the foot. It typically results in inability to bear weight and pain over the area of the tear.
Plantar fasciitis:
A condition involving soft tissue or fascia the bottom of the heel. It presents with pain during weight bearing or activity and typically with the first few steps after awaking or prolonged sitting.
Ankle sprain:
Most common injury to the ankle involves a stretch or tear to the ligaments around the ankle joint. Can be caused by a misstep or twist of the ankle usually resulting in pain, swelling, and sometimes instability.
Ankle arthritis:
Typically associated with wear and tear of the ankle joint and can be from previous trauma. IT will typically present with pain, stiffness, and swelling throughout the ankle joint.
